Nest Perch

This nesting Great Blue Heron was only a few feet away from the other one I posted recently. Regulars at the wetland told me they were probably a pair. Considering it’s nesting, that made sense. See the partner grooming here and here.
Apparently today is World Wetlands Day. A lot of my photos are taken in wetlands. I don’t remember the name of this bird. It’s quite small and was wrestling with a fish that seemed too large for it. Other birds were trying to steal it as well. The light was contrasty but this sighting was worth documenting. Click to enlarge for best view.
Happy World Wetlands Day
Groundhog Day tends to hog the spotlight, but Feb. 2 is also World Wetlands Day. In honor of this overshadowed holiday, here’s a photographic tribute to the planet’s marshes, swamps and bogs — and their animal inhabitants.
In keeping with the Great Blue Heron photos I’ve been posting, here’s another reminder of how valuable wetlands are. I’ve posted about wetlands quite a bit, use the search function on my Tumblr.

When It Comes to Wetlands, It’s Hard to Improve on the Original
Ecologists have found that restored wetlands are not as ecologically valuable as the originals—a new analysis of 621 wetland sites shows that, on average, restored wetlands regained only about three-quarters of their original biological performance.
